Homelessness Statistics for Manatee and Sarasota Counties


All local service statistics reported below are obtained from the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS). Those people who do not request services from a provider that is using HMIS are not being counted.

Over 15,075 new clients were seen by our service providers in 2009.

Over 19,000 people were served by our homeless service providers in 2009.

 Of the clients served, 23% or 4,570 were children.

2008 Homeless Services

*Services received can include food, shelter, transportation, financial funds, medical care, and other items which are provided by agencies to both fulfill the immediate needs of the homeless and to help prevent homelessness for those currently at risk.

556 Students currently enrolled in the Manatee County school system are identified as being homeless!

Families now account for over 40% of the homeless and is the fastest growing section of the homeless population.

It is estimated that 1 out of 100 Americans will experience homelessness this year

The average rent of apartments in complexes with more than 100 units in Sarasota County reached $989 during the second quarter of 2006. That is a 19.9 percent increase from the average rent of $825 in the second quarter of 2005.
